President and CEO Carilion Clinic

Steve Arner is president and CEO of Carilion Clinic, a roughly $2.4 billion nonprofit integrated health system headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia, that serves more than one million people across Virginia and West Virginia. 

Mr. Arner became president in 2023 and assumed the CEO role in 2024, succeeding longtime leader Nancy Howell Agee. A nearly 30-year veteran of Carilion, he joined the organization in 1996 as a financial analyst and rose through roles including budget manager, hospital administrator, senior vice president of cardiothoracic and vascular services, and COO for more than a decade. His internal tenure gives him deep operational knowledge across the system’s hospitals and physician practices. 

Mr. Arner earned an MBA from Brigham Young University and is a past chair of the board of the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association, having also represented the state in national hospital policy forums. Recognized for steady, operations-focused leadership grounded in decades of experience, he has guided Carilion through a significant leadership transition while maintaining continuity. He is regarded as a respected voice for rural and regional healthcare, and his leadership reflects a long-standing commitment to the communities Carilion serves.
