Shannon Carpenter is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and the founder and medical director of The Bone Health Clinic in Lenexa, Kansas.
She built the practice as the first standalone, prevention-focused bone health clinic in the Kansas City region, creating a model for integrated osteoporosis management and patient education. Her approach emphasizes prevention and early detection rather than reactive treatment after a fracture has already occurred.
Dr. Carpenter is a shoulder and elbow fellowship-trained surgeon with specialized expertise in metabolic bone disease, and she earned her medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Before founding the clinic she practiced in hospital-based orthopedics and worked within the Kansas City Veterans Affairs healthcare system, caring for complex and often underserved patient populations.
She launched Demand the Scan, a public awareness campaign encouraging women to obtain a DXA scan at the time of their first mammogram in order to identify osteoporosis risk earlier. Dr. Carpenter has contributed to clinician and patient education through national speaking engagements and peer education initiatives, and she is a frequent voice on the role of bone health in orthopedic outcomes.
In 2026 the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation awarded her the Robert F. Gagel, M.D. Community Leadership Award, which recognizes clinicians who improve osteoporosis care and raise community awareness of bone health.
