Scott Boden is an orthopedic spine surgeon and academic leader who will become executive vice president for university clinical affairs and dean of the Indiana University School of Medicine, the largest medical school in the United States.
He arrives at Indiana University following more than 34 years at Emory University, where he most recently served as a tenured professor, chair emeritus of orthopedic surgery, and vice chair for professional development and innovation. Dr. Boden was the inaugural director of the Emory Orthopaedics and Spine Center and the first chief medical officer and chief quality officer of the Emory University Orthopaedics and Spine Hospital.
He later became Emory Healthcare’s first chief strategy officer, building a fully integrated multidisciplinary musculoskeletal service line and growing it from $20 million to $500 million.
Dr. Boden earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, completed his orthopaedic residency at George Washington University Medical Center and finished a spine fellowship under Henry Bohlman at Case Western Reserve University Hospital.
His clinical work and research have centered on spinal fusion and clinical outcomes in spinal disorders, and he has authored hundreds of peer-reviewed articles and co-authored numerous books. Over the course of his career he has trained hundreds of residents and nearly a hundred spine surgery fellows.
Dr. Boden has served on committees within the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Orthopaedic Research Society and the North American Spine Society.
