Chief Medical Officer and Chief Innovation Officer UCHealth

Richard Zane, MD, is chief medical officer and chief innovation officer of at Aurora, Colo.-based UCHealth, a nonprofit system with roughly $9 billion in operating revenue and more than 35,000 employees. As chief medical officer he oversees clinical, quality, and safety programs, and as chief innovation officer he leads industry and venture relationships that bring new solutions into clinical care. He is the endowed professor and chair of emergency medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and a professor of healthcare administration at the CU Denver Business School. 

He joined the University of Colorado and UCHealth in 2012 after serving as associate professor and vice chair of emergency medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. He earned his medical degree from Temple University in Philadelphia and completed his emergency medicine residency at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He helped scale UCHealth’s Virtual Health Center, extending virtual care across hundreds of clinics, and championed the system’s innovation presence at Denver’s Catalyst HTI.

Dr. Zane is widely featured as a thought leader on healthcare innovation and the future of care delivery. His work combines clinical leadership with a focus on commercializing and operationalizing new technology.
