Richard Barakat, MD, is physician-in-chief and executive director of cancer services and research at the Northwell Cancer Institute, and serves as senior vice president of cancer services for Northwell Health.
An internationally recognized surgeon and clinical investigator, he is a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.
Before joining Northwell, Dr. Barakat was chief of the gynecology service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he held the Ronald O. Perelman Chair in Gynecologic Surgery. There he served as lead investigator on several influential studies, including trials comparing laparoscopic and standard surgery for endometrial cancer and research on lower-extremity lymphedema in women treated for uterine cancer. He is the author or co-author of more than 340 peer-reviewed articles and numerous textbook chapters.
Dr. Barakat is an editor of a surgical atlas on gynecologic cancer and of the latest edition of “Principles and Practice of Gynecologic Oncology,” one of the leading texts in the field. He served for five years as vice chair of the Cancer Prevention Committee of the Gynecologic Oncology Group and as an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is a past president of the Metropolitan Gynecologic Cancer Society, the New York Obstetrical Society, the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, and the International Gynecologic Cancer Society.
