Nicolas Piuzzi is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in adult joint reconstruction at Cleveland Clinic, where he serves as vice chair of research for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and director of Cleveland Clinic Adult Reconstruction Research.
In his research leadership role he oversees enterprise-wide orthopaedic research spanning Cleveland Clinic’s Ohio, Florida and London locations, and he is co-director of the Musculoskeletal Research Center.
Dr. Piuzzi’s clinical expertise covers primary and revision total hip and knee procedures for osteoarthritis, osteonecrosis, arthrofibrosis, osteolysis, periprosthetic infection and periprosthetic fracture. He performs more than 400 complex primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasties each year, incorporating robotics, custom implants and biologic innovations.
His research is committed to the preservation, repair, regeneration, augmentation and replacement of musculoskeletal tissues, and is directly translational to his clinical practice.
Under his leadership, the Cleveland Clinic Adult Reconstruction Research team has applied a decade of patient-reported outcome measures data to build a framework that identifies patients at highest risk of poor outcomes and personalizes their care pathways. That work earned him the 2025 Kappa Delta Young Investigator Award.
Dr. Piuzzi also serves as executive editor of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
