Kevin B. Mahoney is CEO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, a central component of the Penn Medicine enterprise that integrates patient care, research and education. Appointed CEO in 2019, he leads a system that spans seven hospitals — including Pennsylvania Hospital, the nation’s first hospital — more than a dozen multispecialty centers and hundreds of outpatient facilities across Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
Mr. Mahoney joined Penn Medicine in 1996 and held senior leadership roles for nearly three decades before becoming CEO, giving him deep institutional knowledge. Under his leadership, the system completed the $1.6 billion Pavilion patient tower at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and acquired Doylestown Health, adding a seventh hospital in 2025. In 2026, Penn extended his contract through 2031, reinforcing confidence in his long-term strategy.
Mr. Mahoney earned an MBA and is a senior fellow of Penn’s Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics. He has guided the system to strong operating performance amid a challenging environment for academic medicine, recognized as a leader who blends operational discipline with investment in research and innovation. Reflecting a focus on growth, capital renewal and academic excellence, he is regarded as one of the most influential academic health system executives in the Northeast.
