Joseph Zuckerman is chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at NYU Langone Health and the Walter A. L. Thompson Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
He also serves as surgeon-in-chief of NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital. Dr. Zuckerman specializes in shoulder arthroplasty and hip and knee reconstruction, and his clinical interests include osteoarthritis of the knee and shoulder, shoulder and elbow fractures, and rotator cuff repair.
He is a graduate of Cornell University and of the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Washington affiliated hospitals, a fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery and arthritis research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and was a visiting clinician in shoulder surgery at Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Zuckerman joined the faculty of the Hospital for Joint Diseases in 1984 and was appointed chair of its orthopedic surgery department in 1994. Three years later he became chair of the NYU Department of Orthopedic Surgery and led the merger of the two departments.
In 1991 he established the Shoulder Research Group, focused on fractures about the shoulder and rotator cuff disorders.
He is a past president of both the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, and has authored hundreds of peer-reviewed publications along with numerous edited textbooks and book chapters.
Dr. Zuckerman received the 2021 William W. Tipton Jr., MD, Leadership Award from the AAOS.
