Joseph G. Cacchione, MD, FACC, serves as Chief Executive Officer of Jefferson, the integrated enterprise encompassing Jefferson Health, Thomas Jefferson University, and Jefferson Health Plans — one of the largest nonprofit academic health systems in the Mid-Atlantic region, headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With 65,000 employees and a $14 billion operating footprint spanning Pennsylvania and New Jersey, Jefferson is consistently ranked among the top 15 nonprofit health systems in the nation.
Dr. Cacchione joined Jefferson as CEO in September 2022, bringing decades of executive leadership experience in complex, mission-driven healthcare organizations. He spearheaded Jefferson’s landmark 2024 merger with Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, Pennsylvania — a transformative combination that significantly expanded Jefferson’s reach across eastern Pennsylvania and positioned the system as a dominant academic health system in the Philadelphia-to-Lehigh Valley corridor. Jefferson now comprises 32 hospitals and more than 700 sites of care.
Prior to Jefferson, Dr. Cacchione served as Executive Vice President of Clinical and Network Services at Ascension, one of the nation’s largest Catholic health systems. A board-certified interventional cardiologist, he has been recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review and the Philadelphia Business Journal as a transformative leader in American healthcare.
