Frank Phillips is section head of minimally invasive spine surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where he holds the Ronald DeWald Endowed Professorship of Spinal Deformity and directs the spine fellowship program.
He specializes in minimally invasive cervical and lumbar reconstructive and deformity surgery, with expertise in motion-preserving procedures, and he served as a principal investigator in FDA trials on cervical disc replacement.
Dr. Phillips completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Chicago and a spine fellowship at University Hospital in Cleveland under the tutelage of Henry Bohlman.
Over his career he has participated in the development of and pioneered a number of minimally invasive spinal techniques that are now widely used, and he holds more than 20 patents in the space.
He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific articles and more than 50 book chapters, has received numerous research awards and grants, and regularly teaches and lectures to spine surgeons nationally and internationally.
Dr. Phillips is a founder and past president of the Society of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, past president of the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery and the Society of Lateral Access Surgery, and has served as program chair for the Cervical Spine Research Society annual meeting.
In 2021 he received the Leon Wiltse Award from the North American Spine Society for his lifetime contributions to spinal surgery. He is the founder and director of the annual Cabo Think Tank, regarded as one of the preeminent spine meetings.
