Alexander Vaccaro is president of Rothman Orthopaedics and the Richard H. Rothman Professor and chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, where he is also professor of neurosurgery.
He has led Rothman Orthopaedics since 2014, and in his dual role he oversees the clinical, educational and research enterprises for both Rothman and Jefferson.
Dr. Vaccaro is a world-renowned spinal surgeon specializing in the comprehensive treatment of conditions affecting the cervical, thoracic and lumbosacral spine, including degenerative disc disease, scoliosis and other deformities, trauma, infections and tumors. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive surgical techniques and image-guided technologies.
He earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, completed a surgical internship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and his orthopaedic surgery residency at Thomas Jefferson University, then finished a spine fellowship in San Diego. He later earned a PhD in the field of spinal trauma and an MBA from Temple University’s Fox School of Business.
Dr. Vaccaro has authored hundreds of peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and has edited dozens of textbooks.
He is a past president of the Cervical Spine Research Society, the American Spinal Injury Association and the Association for Collaborative Spine Research, and he co-directs the Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center of the Delaware Valley.
He received the Leon Wiltse Award from the North American Spine Society for excellence in leadership and clinical research in spine care, and has served as spine consultant to the Philadelphia Eagles.
