CEO and Surgeon Texas Spine Care Center

Adam Bruggeman, MD, is CEO and surgeon at Texas Spine Care Center in San Antonio, an independent orthopedic spine practice he leads across two locations in the region.

A fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon, Dr. Bruggeman treats complex cervical, thoracic and lumbar conditions, with a practice emphasis on minimally invasive techniques, spinal fusion and perioperative optimization. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery and in addiction medicine, a combination that informs his work on opioid management and pain care in the surgical setting. Dr. Bruggeman is one of the field’s more visible advocates for independent physician practice, and he writes and speaks frequently on Medicare physician payment, value-based payment models and the economics of spine care.

He is a past chair of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Advocacy Council, where he led the academy’s engagement with federal and state legislative and regulatory bodies, and a past president of the Texas Orthopaedic Association. He is also a member of the American Orthopaedic Association’s Emerging Leaders program and previously served on the association’s academic leadership committee.

Earlier in his training he was selected as the only orthopedic resident in the country that year to serve as a resident representative to the Association of American Medical Colleges. Dr. Bruggeman earned a bachelor’s degree in health administration and policy from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., and a master’s degree in hospital administration from Trinity University in San Antonio before entering medicine.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, graduating first in his class and earning election to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society, completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Florida, where he helped care for collegiate athletes, and completed a spine surgery fellowship at South Texas Spinal Clinic. He has been recognized with Becker’s Healthcare Spine Surgeon Leadership Award for his entrepreneurship and leadership in the field.
