A. Bobby Chhabra is chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia, where he holds the Lillian T. Pratt Distinguished Professorship and is the David A. Harrison Distinguished Educator.
He has led the department since 2013 and serves as director of the UVA Health Orthopedic Center and as a team physician for UVA Athletics. Dr. Chhabra’s clinical expertise covers hand, wrist and elbow trauma and arthritis, with particular interest in sports injuries and congenital hand surgery.
He was the physician lead behind the development of the UVA Hand Center and the 200,000-square-foot UVA Health Orthopedic Center, which opened in 2022.
Dr. Chhabra earned his undergraduate degree in biology from Johns Hopkins University and his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where he also completed his orthopaedic surgery residency. He completed fellowship training in hand and upper extremity, microvascular and congenital hand surgery at the Hand Center of San Antonio and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital before returning to the UVA faculty in 2002.
He is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and in surgery of the hand and has authored or co-authored more than 100 articles in professional journals. Dr. Chhabra served as president of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand in 2025-2026 and is a fellow of both the American Orthopaedic Association and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
