VA, DOD seek director and deputy director of EHR modernization office

Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense are conducting a joint search for a deputy director and director of the agencies' EHR modernization efforts.

The two leadership positions are within the Federal Electronic Health Record Modernization Program Office, and the executives will manage the VA and DOD's transitions to Cerner EHR systems.

The DOD is responsible for appointing FEHRM's director, who will report directly to the deputy secretary of defense and the deputy secretary of VA. VA will choose the office's deputy director, who will also report directly to the deputy secretaries of both the VA and DOD.

The VA plans to go-live on its new EHR at initial operating sites in March 2020. The agency formed a 10-year contract with Cerner in May 2018 to develop and deploy an EHR across its care network for $16 billion. DOD, which is also under contract with Cerner, began an initial rollout of its new EHR in 2017 before hitting delays due to technical issues. The agency is currently scheduled to go-live on the system at its Fairfield, Calif.-based U.S. Air Force base in September.
