The Texas Hospital Association is helping hospitals throughout the state add an additional layer of clinical decision support to their EHRs, the Houston Chronicle reports.

In 2018, some Texas Hospital Association members began using Smart Ribbon, a product developed by the trade group. The product places a ribbon image over a hospital’s EHR, which displays relevant data on patient medications, labs and radiology services from connected data feeds — such as information on opioid prescription history from prescription drug monitoring programs.

The Texas Hospital Association’s goal for the program is to provide physicians with relevant information at the point of care, so they don’t have to exit their EHR when treating patients.

“With the Smart Ribbon, I can now see easily without having to go to the PDMP site that Patient X was prescribed 14 pain pills two days ago at another hospital, so now I will only prescribe an additional six pills instead of prescribing a full order again,” S. Nicholas Desai, DPM, enterprise CMO of Houston Methodist, told the Houston Chronicle.
