Digital tool can reduce risk of blood clots, Northwell study says

A new study from the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, the research arm of New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health, showed a new digital tool could reduce the risk of blood clots in recently released and hospitalized patients.

The tool, IMPROVE-DD VTE, uses EHR data to alert clinicians of a patient’s risk of venous thromboembolism, a condition occurring when a blood clot forms in a vein. These alerts allow clinicians to prescribe clot-blocking medication before a patient seriously deteriorates.

The study showed that the use of the tool led to a 50 percent increase in prescriptions of clot preventive medications, according to a Nov. 7 Northwell news release.

Full results from the study are pending peer review and will be made available in the American Heart Association’s journal.
