Microsoft restores bitcoin payments

After taking a brief hiatus from accepting bitcoin payments on its Windows and Xbox online stores, Microsoft is welcoming the option back, Fortune reports.

The company first started taking bitcoin payments in 2014. However, earlier this week, Microsoft removed the option that let customers use bitcoin to buy online games and apps because of its volatility.

Microsoft quickly changed its mind, and now customers can add bitcoin to their Microsoft-sanctioned digital wallets and redeem them as dollars, according to Fortune.

"We've restored bitcoin as a payment option in our store after working with our provider to ensure lower bitcoin amounts would be redeemable by customers," a company spokesperson told news.com.au Wednesday.

In mid-December, bitcoin's value surged above $19,000, but a few days later it dropped more than 22 percent to around $15,000.
