Illinois health department erroneously mails out names, addresses of 4k people

Earlier in 2018 , the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services and the Illinois Department of Human Services mailed 4,136 individuals notices that contained their personal information to  incorrect addresses, a department spokesperson confirmed to Becker's Hospital Review.

The mailings —  which listed the right individuals but the wrong addresses —  were sent in February. They could have included some health insurance, medical and financial information, as well as dates of birth. However, detailed medical records and Social Security numbers were not exposed and the risk of identity theft is believed to be "very low," according to an agency news release.

The department could not confirm whether any of the notices had been opened. Additionally, the department reconfigured its system to prevent future incidents.
