Hackers wipe 26k MongoDB databases, demand $200+ for each ransom: 5 things to know

Three groups of hackers targeted roughly 26,000 databases on MongoDB with ransomware Labor Day weekend, according to ZDNet.

Here are five things to know.

1. MongoDB is a free, open-source database program on which users store information, mostly in the form of documents.

2. Hackers have a history of targeting MongoDB databases running on unsecured default settings, which haven't applied appropriate security protections.

3. One hacker group demanded targets send 0.15 bitcoin, or about $650, to restore their data. Another group demanded 0.05 bitcoin, or about $200.

4. Only one hacker group has received a ransom payment thus far.

5. The Labor Day weekend cyberattacks mark a "resurgence" of the ransomware scheme on MongoDB databases, according to ZDNet. Since the attacks started in December, more than a dozen hacker groups have targeted more than 75,000 victims.
