FBI director: Cybersecurity threats from China are 'unprecedented'

FBI Director Christopher Wray warned that the current scale of espionage and cybersecurity threats from China were "unprecedented in history," The Hill reported.

In an April 24 interview, Mr. Wray said that the biggest threat targeting the U.S. is the People's Republic of China, especially the Chinese Communist Party.

"They are targeting our innovation, our trade secrets, our intellectual property, on a scale that's unprecedented in history," Mr. Wray said.

He noted that China's hacking program is larger than that of every other major nation combined.

To counter the attacks from China, which Mr. Wary attributed to stealing Americans' personal and corporate data, the FBI is opening a China counterintelligence investigation every 12 hours.

"There's well north of 2,000 of these investigations. All 56 of our field offices are engaged on it, and I can assure that it's not because our agents don't have enough else to do," Mr. Wray said. "It's a measure of how significant the threat is."

Mandiant, a cybersecurity firm, reported that China attacked at least six U.S. state governments in the past year.
