Amazon has acquired Israeli disaster-recovery startup CloudEndure, Reuters reports. CloudEndure offers continuous backup and cloud migration services to help businesses move their data to the cloud.
Four notes:
1. Israeli media outlets first reported the acquisition rumor, according to CNBC. According to these reports, Amazon reputedly planned to purchase CloudEndure for $200 million.
2. CloudEndure confirmed it was acquired by Amazon's cloud computing service, Amazon Web Services, in a post on Twitter Jan. 10. It did not disclose financial details of the transaction.
3. The deal seemingly will allow Amazon to integrate CloudEndure's backup and migration capabilities into AWS. This could prove an attractive benefit to businesses interested in disaster recovery, or the ability to recover lost data, such as after a cybersecurity incident.
4. Companies are increasingly focused on backing up their data in the wake of recent high-profile cyberattacks, such as the worldwide WannaCry ransomware attack in 2017. During the attack, many organizations struggled to maintain operations because they couldn't access — or didn't have — backup data.
