53% of security operations centers say their cybersecurity investigations are ineffective

Almost half (49 percent) of security operations center analysts believe their organization's SOC is not fully aligned with their businesses' needs, according to a Ponemon Institute survey.

For the report, which was sponsored by data analytics platform Devo Technology, Ponemon Institute surveyed 554 information technology and IT security practitioners in organizations with an SOC who are trained in their facilities' cybersecurity practices.

An SOC's tasks range from implementing technologies, patching vulnerabilities, investigating threats and assessing risks.

Three survey insights:

1. The top barrier to SOC success is the lack of visibility into IT security infrastructure, 65 percent of respondents said.

2. Fifty-three percent of survey respondents said their SOC's ability to gather evidence, investigate and identify the source of cybersecurity threats is ineffective.

3. More than half (65 percent) of survey respondents said they have considered changing careers or leaving their jobs because of the stress they feel working in the SOC, including an increasing workload and being on call 24/7/365.
