Data privacy tops direct-to-consumer DNA test concerns: report

Only about two-thirds of DNA test kit users know exactly how their data is being used by direct-to-consumer testing companies beyond providing information about their ancestry and genetics, according to a new report from genomics platform LunaPBC.

Indeed, when asked about their primary concerns regarding mail-order DNA testing, many of the 2,000 American adults surveyed for the report cited worries about the parties that would have access to their test results.

Here are the top five concerns listed by the respondents, about 20 percent of whom had used a DNA test kit:

1. Discovering they carry a genetic disease

2. Insurance companies accessing their results

3. Uncovering family secrets

4. DNA being used by law enforcement

5. DNA being used to make a clone
