Study: Specialty Compensation Rises in 2009

The American Medical Group Association's 2010 Medical Group Compensation and Financial Survey reported most specialties saw a small increase in compensation in 2009, while many provider organizations experienced continued financial loss, according to a Newswise report.

The survey found 76 percent of specialties experienced an increase in compensation in 2009, with an average increase of 3.8 percent. Primary care specialties saw a 3.8 percent increase, while other medical specialties averaged a 2.4 percent increase and surgical specialties averaged a 3.8 percent increase.

The specialties that experienced the largest compensation increases were pulmonary disease at 10.37 percent, dermatology at 7 percent and urology at 6.36 percent.

Despite these increases, many medical groups still faced significant financial hurdles. In 2009, organizations in the eastern and western regions were breaking even, while organizations in the southern region continued to operate at a loss. Groups in the northern region also experienced significant losses.
