A prison physician in California can earn almost $250,000 in annual compensation plus overtime or extra-duty compensation, while the mean annual compensation of other physicians in California was $191,650 in 2009, the report said. Physicians across the entire U.S. earned roughly $180,870 in 2009.
The report said a lack of prison physicians and a tough working environment lead to the higher compensation packages.
“The job markets recognize that these are not nice places to work,” said Stuart Bussey, president of the Union of American Physicians and Dentists, in the report. “These doctors are working in places that are not desirable to live, working up to 12 hours a day and with clients that they would never have to work with in private practice.”
