Anesthesiologists, gastroenterologists and radiologists reported decreased median compensation from 2009, whereas internists, pediatric/adolescent physicians, psychiatrists, dermatologists, neurologists and general surgeons reported increases.
Below is the median compensation for different specialties and a comparison to 2009 data:
• Radiologists — $471,253, a decrease of 1.58 percent
• Internists — $205,379, an increase of 4.21 percent
• Pediatric/adolescent medicine physicians — $192,148, an increase of .39 percent
Compensation also differs based on geographic location, according to the report. Physicians in the Southern region reported the greatest compensation, at $216,170 for primary care and $404,000 for specialty care. Eastern region physicians reported the lowest earnings at $194,409 for primary care and $305,575 for specialty care.
