Compensation Issues

Several reports have come out in recent months highlighting physician compensation trends. While data periods, criteria and samples differed over such reports, some trends emerged that showed consistent data, including a strong correlation between compensation increases in certain specialties.

Median sign-on bonuses in 2023 varied across physician specialties, according to Sullivan Cotter's 2022-23 Physician Compensation and Productivity Report. 

Hematology and oncology physicians saw the largest median compensation increases in 2024, according to SullivanCotter's 2023-24 Physician Compensation and Productivity Report. 

The compensation package for Children's Hospital of Philadelphia CEO Madeline Bell was under a spotlight last week after the Philadelphia Inquirer published an article revealing her 2021 pay in early September.

Three employees of West Virginia United Health System, commonly branded as WVU Medicine, recently filed a class-action lawsuit against the health system, alleging it failed to compensate them for overtime work.

In July, registered nurse travel jobs in the cardiac progressive care unit received the highest pay, according to one new analysis. 

Nurse practitioners are projected to be the fastest-growing occupation in healthcare and the second fastest-growing occupation in all industries from 2022 to 2032.

The average weekly travel nurse pay in August in the U.S. was $2,430.33, down 9.56 percent from $2,687.13 in the same month in 2022, according to a report from Vivian Health, a national healthcare hiring marketplace.
