Directors in hospital-owned emergency medicine practices earned $20,000 per year while directors in nonhospital-owned practices earned $60,000, according to MGMA’s Medical Directorship and On-Call Compensation Survey:2010 Report Based on 2009 Data.

Surgical subspecialist directors received $40,000 annually in both hospital and nonhospital-owned practices, although compensation varied widely across specialties. The greatest compensation was reported for pathology, at $90,000 per year. The majority of medical practices reported median compensation levels of less than $50,000 annually.

In addition, directors who were responsible for attending meetings reported much lower compensation levels than directors who did not have to attend meetings.
