Humana CEO's pay more than tripled in 2016

Humana CEO Bruce Broussard's total compensation more than tripled in 2016, despite the Louisville, Ky.-based company's weak financial performance last year.

Mr. Broussard's total compensation in 2016 was about $17 million, according to Humana's annual proxy filing. That amount includes his base salary — which remained nearly flat year over year — annual incentive compensation and realized stock gains. Mr. Broussard's pay in 2016 was more than three times higher than in the year prior when he earned nearly $4.8 million.

Mr. Broussard's compensation package increased, despite Humana's rocky financial performance last year. In fiscal year 2016, Humana reported consolidated pretax income of $1.55 billion, down 36 percent from $2.43 billion in the year prior.
