Hospital Leaders in Wisconsin's Capital Earn More Than National Average

Top executives of Madison, Wis.-based hospitals and health systems earn more than the national average of roughly $630,000 in total compensation, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report.

The following are the hospital and health system executives and their total compensation figures for 2009 (including salary, bonuses, pension and other benefits):

•    Mary Starmann-Harrison, former CEO of SSM Health Care of Wisconsin:  $806,024
•    Jim Woodward, CEO of Meriter Hospital:  $734,443
•    Donna Katen-Bahensky, CEO of UW Hospital:  $689,585
•    Frank Byrne, president of St. Mary's Hospital:  $635,517

The report also found that executives at Madison-based health insurance companies were above national averages, as the CEOs for Dean Health Plan and Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin made more than $1 million each.
