The executive director of the Hawaii Government Employees Association claims nurses in Hawaii are seeing a large gap between public and private sector pay, according to a Honolulu Civil Beat report.
The salary for an entry-level public-system nurse in Hawaii falls between $57,828 and $71,772, according to the report. On an hourly basis, though, private-sector nurses are earning more — anywhere from $34.10 to $48.72 per hour. This range can result in annual salaries of approximately $71,000 to $101,000.
The president of the Hawaii Nurses Association said comparing the two sectors is like comparing apples and oranges, since salaries may not reflect benefits, according to the report. On average, benefits for state employees outweigh those in the private sector.
