Losing Highmark patients could hinder physicians from meeting their productivity requirements, the report said. Physicians are partially compensated by relative value units, which assign a numeric value to the services a physician performs.
However, UPMC officials said they do not anticipate the Highmark contract — which has nine more months before expiration — to be an issue with its 2,900 employed physicians as UPMC begins to move away from traditional volume-based payment models, and any physician contracts with Highmark would be adjusted in the short term, according to the report.
