The layoffs and closures were proposed by Jackson’s CEO Eneida Roldan, who made the suggestions as a way to cut costs by $165.4 million and avoid the health system running out of cash by May. Ms. Roldan’s proposal calls for closing Jackson South and Jackson North hospitals.
If no cuts are made, Jackson is expected to lose $229.4 million in 2010, according to The Herald. Ms. Roldan asked members of the Public Health Trust, which oversees the hospital, to act within 10 business days on her proposal.
Union representatives urged Ms. Roldan to work with them to find new efficiencies within the system before taking such drastic measures, according to the story.
