California State Senator Requests Audit Into Taxpayer-Funded Kern Health Systems

California State Sen. Michael Rubio (D-16th District) has requested a state audit for taxpayer-funded Kern Health Systems, following public outrage over a proposed $42,000 pay raise for CEO Carol Sorrell, according to a KGET report.

Ms. Sorrell turned down the pay bump since the outcry, noting in a statement that the timing was not appropriate. Kern Health Systems is a taxpayer-funded local health plan initiative that gives benefits to low-income patients through Medi-Cal and other programs.

Sen. Rubio submitted a letter to the state auditor requesting an investigation into how much money in savings public programs like Kern Health Systems are holding in reserve. According to Ms. Sorrell, KHS holds around $65 million in reserve because payments for services delivered are not immediately reimbursed by the state.
