Boston-Area Non-Profit Teaching Hospital CEO Compensation Flat

Most presidents and CEOs at Boston-based non-profit teaching hospitals earned seven-figure compensation in 2009, but those packages were flat or lower compared with their 2008 pay, according to a Boston Globe report.

Pay packages included the following:

•    James Mongan, former CEO of Partners HealthCare System, the holding company for Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women’s hospitals, received $2.1 million in total compensation in 2009 and $3.6 million in 2008.
•    Gary Gottlieb, president of Brigham and Women’s, earned $1.6 million in 2009, the same he earned in 2008.
•    Peter Slavin, president of Massachusetts General, earned $1.4 million in 2009, equal to what he earned in 2008.
•    Elaine Ullian, former CEO of Boston Medical Center, earned $1.8 million in 2009 but earned $4.8 million in 2008.
•    Ellen Zane, CEO of Tufts Medical Center, earned about $1.2 million in 2009, the same she earned in 2008.
•    Paul Levy, former CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Harvard teaching hospital, received roughly $942,000, down from $1.3 million he earned in 2008.
