Board Member at California's Southern Humboldt Defends Administrator's Salary

Nancy Wilson, RN, board member of the Southern Humboldt Community Healthcare District in Garberville, Calif., wrote a letter in the Redwood Times defending the recent salary hike of SHCHD Administrator Harry Jasper.

The SHCHD recently approved a new contract with Mr. Jasper, which included a raise of $78,000. Previously, his salary was $102,000, and now it is $180,000 with the potential to earn an additional $30,000 for reaching performance goals.

However, the raise sparked outcry from the public, which asked for more transparency into the process.

Ms. Wilson was on the committee that drafted the new contract for Mr. Jasper, and she defended the raise, saying "Mr. Jasper has put our district on firm footing for the first time since I came here in 1963." She also said Mr. Jasper's salary is still low for an administrator of a healthcare district that includes a critical access hospital.

According to statistics from the California Hospital Association, salaries for rural hospital CEOs in California range from $290,000 to $439,000.
