This past February, Medscape fielded compensation survey responses from 24,216 U.S. physicians across 25 specialty areas and recently released its Physician Compensation Report: 2012 Results. It compiled the compensation data across several categories, including work setting, and the average salary of a hospital-employed physician across all specialties was $225,000 in 2011.
Here are the individual salary benchmarks for all 25 physician specialties from the survey.

3. Cardiology: $254,000
4. Orthopedics: $251,000
5. Critical care: $247,000
6. Emergency medicine: $247,000
7. General surgery: $226,000
8. Pathology and lab medicine: $221,000
9. Gastroenterology: $205,000
10. Obstetrics/gynecology/women’s health: $194,000
11. Urology: $192,000
12. Oncology: $190,000
13. Psychiatry and mental health: $174,000
14. Pulmonary medicine: $174,000
15. Family medicine: $169,000
16. Infectious diseases: $168,000
17. Internal medicine: $163,000
18. Nephrology: $161,000
19. Dermatology: $157,000
20. Plastic surgery and aesthetic medicine: $155,000
21. Endocrinology: $153,000
