In addition to having the highest average patient care income, orthopedists rake in the most in compensation from nonpatient care activities, according to Medscape's 2015 Physician Compensation Report.
Many physicians earn compensation from expert witness duties, product sales, speaking engagements, and other activities, in addition to what they earn from caring for patients.
The five physician specialties that earn the most for nonpatient care activities are:
- Orthopedics — $29,000
- Urology — $26,000
- Plastic Surgery — $26,000
- Dermatology — $26,000
- Neurology — $24,000
The physician specialties that earn the least from nonpatient care activities include:
- Radiology — $6,000
- Pediatrics — $7,000
- Anesthesiology — $8,000
The Medscape report includes responses from more than 19,500 physicians across 26 specialties.
