Medscape recently released its Residents Salary & Debt Report 2014, which provides insight into several trends in medical resident compensation, such as how salary varies by geographic region and how payment affects the appeal of going into family or internal medicine.

1. The rise of compensation by residency year: 8 statistics
Average resident salaries start at $51,000 during the first year after medical school and grow to $66,000 in the eighth year post-MD.

2. Residents in the Northwest earn the most: Average salaries for 9 U.S. regions
U.S. medical residents in the Northwest report the highest average salaries, while those in the Southeast earn the least.

3. Resident salaries for 24 specialties: Low pay dampens appeal of family, internal medicine
Resident salaries mirror physician compensation in that those in family and internal medicine earn the least, while residents in specialties such as critical care, radiology and pulmonary medicine get paid the most.
