29 physician specialties gaining, losing ground on pay

Diabetes and endocrinology physicians saw the greatest increase in pay this year, while four specialties have seen pay cuts, according to a July 8 Medscape report.

“‘Comparing Your Pay Against Your Peers’: Medscape Physician Compensation Report 2025” surveyed 7,322 physicians across more than 29 specialties between Oct. 3, 2024, and Jan. 15, 2025. The report asked about average salary, incentives and other compensation metrics.

Here are 29 physician specialties by how much their pay has increased or decreased

Diabetes and endocrinology: 7%

Nephrology: 6%

Infectious diseases: 6%

Pathology: 6%

Physical medicine and rehabilitation: 6%

Anesthesiology: 6%

OB-GYN: 6%

Otolaryngology: 6%

Radiology: 5%

Psychiatry: 5%

Internal medicine: 4%

Critical care: 4%

Allergy and immunology: 4%

Family medicine: 3%

General surgery: 3%

Emergency medicine: 2%

Public health and preventive medicine: 2%
