States with the most, fewest trauma centers per capita

Arizona has the most level 1 trauma centers per capita and Washington has the fewest centers per capita, a study found.

The study, published in Annals of Emergency Medicine, used American Trauma Society Trauma Information Exchange Program data to calculate the number of state-certified level 1 trauma centers in each state in 2020. They then used census information to calculate the number of centers per capita in every state. Researchers identified 216 level 1 trauma centers across 45 states, and five states — Alaska, Idaho, Monana, South Dakota and Wyoming — were excluded for not having a level 1 trauma center.

In 2020, Arizona, Missouri, Vermont, Illinois and North Dakota have the highest number of level 1 trauma centers per capita and Washington, Oregon, Oklahoma, Utah and Nevada had the lowest number of level 1 trauma centers per capita.
