HCA hospital resumes some surgeries after sterilization-related delay

HCA Florida North Florida Hospital in Gainesville has resumed some surgeries after shutting down procedures earlier this month to address equipment sterilization issues.

A spokesperson for the 510-bed hospital confirmed that some surgeries have resumed and that it is working on rescheduling procedures.

"We have resumed surgeries and our care teams are actively working to reschedule patients whose surgeries have been temporarily postponed," the spokesperson said in a statement shared with Becker's on Jan. 29. "The well-being of our patients remain[s] our highest priority, and our care teams are working as diligently and quickly as possible."

North Florida Hospital, part of Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare, confirmed earlier this month that it was suspending elective surgeries for four days, beginning Jan. 17, to address equipment sterilization issues.

A hospital spokesperson said at the time that the equipment-related issue was affecting "presurgical processes" and that it was rescheduling certain elective procedures "out of an abundance of caution."

The spokesperson did not address other questions related to what specifically prompted the initial concerns or the type of equipment affected. On Jan. 29, a spokesperson also did not address the number of affected patients.

While some surgeries have resumed, anonymous surgeons told Fresh Take Florida in a Jan. 26 report that North Florida Hospital was suspending all nonemergency surgeries for another week to address the issues.
