Cleveland Clinic is pursuing level 1 trauma center status at its main campus as regional demand for trauma services increases.

Level 1 trauma centers provide the highest level of trauma care, including 24/7 access to a full range of surgical and medical specialties. The health system said the American College of Surgeons will conduct a consultative visit this year, with plans to open the trauma center in 2028.

Cleveland Clinic plans to expand its emergency department and recruit additional trauma specialists over the next two years as it pursues verification, the system said in a Jan. 15 news release.

In its Ohio market, Cleveland Clinic currently operates a level 1 adult trauma center at Akron General Hospital, and level 2 trauma centers at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights, Mercy Hospital in Canton and Fairview Hospital in Cleveland.

“Cleveland Clinic is committed to providing the highest quality care to all patients and expanding our capacity to care for critically ill and injured patients,” Tom Mihaljevic, MD, CEO and president of  Cleveland Clinic, said in a statement. “Adding a level 1 trauma center to our main campus will extend our world-class care to patients in need of trauma care, provide continuity of care for our patients and help us better meet the needs of our community.”
