The recommendations, derived from a literature search, were updated to incorporate advances in stroke diagnosis and treatment. The recommendations were first published in March 2000.

Some of the BAC’s recommendations include performing heart imaging and two new techniques for imaging the blood vessels in and around the brain. The BAC also gives the option of using MRI of the brain instead of CT if the MRI meets the time requirements of CT scans.
