The Department of Veterans Affairs will invest $4.8 billion in fiscal year 2026 to modernize and upgrade its healthcare infrastructure.
Four notes:
1. The funding, the largest single-year investment in the Veterans Health Administration’s Non-Recurring Maintenance program, will support facility and equipment upgrades to improve care delivery, according to a Jan. 28 department news release. The program covers one-time maintenance projects not classified as routine.
2. Of the total, $2.8 billion will go toward repairing and upgrading outdated infrastructure systems at VA medical facilities. An additional $1 billion is designated for electronic health record system modernization, including preparation for future updates.
3. The department allocated $500 million each for building upgrades — such as elevators, electrical systems and boiler plants — and for modernization efforts to align medical centers with current and future care needs.
4. Project decisions will be made quarterly, with $468 million approved for the first quarter of fiscal year 2026.
