The Institute of Medicine made several recommendations to HHS to improve the safety of HIT. In addition, IOM called on HHS to issue a plan within 12 months to minimize HIT-related patient safety risks and report on progress annually.
Chairwoman Ellmers requested a copy of Secretary Sebelius’ plan; a description of HIT-related errors resulting in patient risk, injuries and deaths; and the status of the development of a procedure for HIT vendors and users to report HIT-related deaths.
