CDC: Percentage of Annual ED Visits Stable 2001-2011

Each year from 2001 to 2011, approximately 20 percent of Americans visited the emergency department at least once, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics report, "Health, United States, 2012: With Special Feature on Emergency Care."

In addition, approximately 7 percent of Americans visited the ED twice or more in 2011, according to the report.

While the percentage of Americans visiting the ED annually remained stable from 2001 to 2011, the visit rate, which accounts for changes in population, increased 16 percent: from 37 visits per 100 persons in 1995 to 43 visits in 2010. Meanwhile, the supply of EDs decreased about 11 percent in 2011, according to the report.
