Brooklyn EDs' Diversion, Ambulance Ban Spike Volume at New York Methodist

A New York City hospital emergency department's diversion plus an ambulance ban at another hospital put a strain on local hospitals July 15, according to a Brooklyn Daily Eagle report.

A problem with the air conditioning and a request from the hospital led to Brooklyn Hospital Center going on diversion, according to the report. In addition, Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn is on an ambulance ban by parent institution SUNY Downstate, according to the report. "Despite a court restraining order, Downstate is continuing to dismantle LICH, barring ambulances from LICH's emergency room, closing core departments and prohibiting new admissions," the report stated.

The diversion and ban caused an increase in ED volume of roughly 10 percent at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn July 16, according to the report.
