Walmart, Dick's Sporting Goods and Kroger will no longer sell guns or ammunition to anyone under 21, according to CNN Money.
The moves come in the wake of the Feb. 14 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. The shooter, 19 year-old Nikolas Cruz, legally purchased multiple rifles. According to federal laws, it is illegal to sell handguns to people under the age of 21, but individuals over 18 can purchase rifles, including assault rifles.
"In light of recent events, we've taken an opportunity to review our policy on firearm sales," Walmart wrote in a statement. "Going forward, we are raising the age restriction for purchase of firearms and ammunition to 21 years of age. We will update our processes as quickly as possible to implement this change."
Kroger, the nation's largest grocery store chain, will impose the same restrictions at its 45 Fred Meyers stores across four states. Kroger grocery stores do not sell weapons. Dick's Sporting Goods also said it will end all sales of assault rifles and high-capacity magazines.
