Mary Barra, chairman and CEO of General Motors, said higher tariffs proposed by President Donald Trump could lead to layoffs at one of its most prominent U.S. plants, according to NBC News.
Ms. Barra said GM's factory in Spartanburg, S.C., the largest exporter of American-made vehicles, would have to cut back operations if President Trump carried out 25 percent tariffs on foreign cars and auto parts.
"Increased import tariffs could lead to a smaller GM, a reduced presence at home and abroad for this iconic American company, and risk less — not more — U.S. jobs," GM told the U.S. Commerce Department, according to NBC News.
U.S. car companies have warned that the tariffs could negatively affect domestic production because many U.S. companies use foreign parts.
